What is Start Something?
Start Something is a program designed to help young people ages 8 to 17 identify and achieve their dreams and goals. It shows you how to take positive actions that will bring you closer to your goals, and helps build qualities like initiative, leadership and community stewardship. Start Something now includes two curriculum programs, Part 1 and Part 2. (Part 1 must be completed first.) Students can participate as part of a class or other group, or on their own through this web site (younger students will benefit from the guidance of an adult.) Start Something is sponsored by Target Stores and the Tiger Woods Foundation.

How do I get involved?
You can participate in Parts 1 and 2 of the Start Something program as part of a group of students under the guidance of a teacher or group leader, or on your own, through this web site. The entire program curriculum is available online to both students and teachers. To begin, first sign up, then follow the prompts to start your first session.

How does the program work?
Start Something was first offered as a written character development curriculum for teachers and community-based youth group leaders. Our online version now makes the 18 sessions in Part 1 and Part 2 available to individual students, and offers groups exciting new tools and activities. The program can be done using written materials, online, or a combination of the two. But even if you’re doing the program traditionally, you will benefit by using the online tools and activities—we encourage you to check them out!

The program is divided into two parts.
Part 1 includes ten sessions that focus on personal development and community stewardship. These sessions can be done in as little as several weeks, or spread it out over several months. It is completely flexible. Students who complete Part 1 can apply for a Start Something scholarship to pursue further study toward a goal or dream.

The eight sessions in Part 2 help students build on what they’ve learned in Part 1, and develop a portfolio that they can use to showcase their work. Students must complete Part 1 before beginning Part 2.

What kinds of things will I do in the Start Something program?
Each session asks you to complete a series of activities. Examples include reading from the Start Something book, writing down thoughts about what you've read, writing a brief report, and coming up with ideas for things you want to do in your life.

Part I helps you think about your dreams and goals, and shows you how to choose and complete an Action Project that is based on one of those dreams or goals. Part 2 will get you thinking more about the world around you and show you the importance of building a portfolio to showcase your work.

The first five sessions help you think about your dreams and goals, and then to choose and prepare for an Action Project that is based on one of those dreams or goals. Sessions 6 and 7 are devoted to doing your Action Project. Sessions 8 through 10 are a time to reflect on your efforts and prepare and give a presentation about your project for your family and friends.

What can I do with a Start Something scholarship?
A Start Something scholarship can be used for almost anything that will help take you toward a positive dream or goal. Examples include music lessons, sports camps, special educational programs, travel and equipment. Scholarships are awarded three times a year, and applications are due May 1, September 1 and January 1. Over the course of each year, the Start Something program will award scholarships ranging from $100 to $5,000 for a total of $300,000.

Can I just apply for a Start Something scholarship?
The program is designed to foster specific ideals, such as leadership and community stewardship, in addition to encouraging you to pursue your dreams. To be true to the mission of the Tiger Woods Foundation, we ask that you complete Part 1 of the Start Something program to be eligible for a scholarship.

Dear Soon To Be "Start Something" Members,

You can purchase the book, "Start Something"...You Can Make A Difference, by Earl Woods and the Tiger Woods Foundation at your local Target Store or at Amazon.com (they have new & used copies). It's a Great read and will teach you loads about friendship, family, school, teamwork, community and life; and the Forward is by Tiger Woods, Mr. Earl Woods's famous son. I've read mine a few times and will likely read it several more times as I get older, I'm sure.

Good luck.
